The Kalexiko HQ is located just to the east of Birmingham’s dynamic city centre. We love it here and we’d like to share with you a few of our favourite things.
Birmingham’s Bullring centre is number one for shopping. Highlights here include the retail heavyweights Selfridges and Debenhams but there’s also lots of familiar high street names and some smaller, specialist boutiques.
2. More shopping!
When we’ve explored all the fashion options in the Bullring, there’s always The Mailbox. Opened in 2000, The Mailbox is one of those rare things; a big chunk of modern architecture where the designers got it right. It’s pretty cool inside too, with an array of high fashion outlets such as Harvey Nichols, Armani and DKNY. It also has a wide range of restaurants and cafe bars.
3. Delicious food and drink
ctually, we’re spoilt for scrumptious food and drink here. Kalexiko favourites include Jamie Oliver’s Italian, Pushkar (rated the number one Indian restaurant in Birmingham), Itihaas (we recommend the delicious Indian tapas) and Wagamama (bowls of delicious noodle soup, brimming with flavour and a spicy kick). A mention also for Starbucks, especially the Colmore Row branch where the staff are both friendly and super efficient; and if the weather is kind, alfresco eating in Brindley Place is a great Friday lunch time treat.
4. The theatre
We’re culture vultures too and we always keep a close eye on what’s on at The Rep Theatre. The eclectic mix here offers plays for all ages and tastes. Both ‘Bob the Man on the Moon’ and ‘Waiting for Godot’ sound good to us.
5. The architecture
A great way to spend an hour in Birmingham and not spend a penny is to take a walk and view the amazing architecture. A stroll around the perimeter of the city centre takes you past many proud Victorian buildings that now rub shoulders with the glass and steel constructions of the modern age. We recommend you grab a map and plan a circular route taking in the famous canal towpaths. Many of these have now been restored to their former red brick splendour.
6. Art and galleries
Just like all creatives we are naturally curious and want to know what everyone else is up to. This means we like to regularly check out the latest art and design exhibitions. The Three White Walls gallery (also in The Mailbox) and the Icon Gallery are always strong favourites.
Now it’s fair to say that at Kalexiko we love tech. That’s why for the computer curious among us, the Apple Store (also in the Bullring) is a must. Visit here on a weekday evening and look carefully, and you may just be able to spot a Kalexiko designer in his natural habitat.
8. The footy
When it comes to sport, football is always number one. We’re locally loyal and most weekends, certain Kalexiko team members can be seen sporting stylish burgundy and cheering along with the crowds at Villa Park.
9. BRMB sounds good to us
We must give a big ‘shout out’ to BRMB radio; Brum’s very own radio station. OK, nonstop contemporary pop may not be everyone’s mug of mocha but sometimes it?s just what we fancy (and if not, we can always tune into to Jazz FM for something a little more sophisticated).
10. What’s your favourite?
We’re also keen to know what you love about it here in Birmingham (or what you really miss if you have had to move away). Why not email/ facebook/ twitter tell us your favourites and share the love?
